A letter from WordCamp Europe to Emmanuel Macron, the president of France

An english translation of this post is available below

Merci

L’Équipe organisatrice de WordCamp Europe 2017

English translation

Dear Mr President,

We witnessed your victory, and we witnessed one of your first public statements where you asked scientists working on climate change to join you in France. Now, we are not climate specialists although we think the environment is important and should be on top of our priorities. We are not scientists – we are people transforming the internet with WordPress, an open source CMS that now powers more than 28% of all the websites in the world (source: W3techs).

In less than a month now, Paris will welcome people from all over the world for WordCamp Europe, the most important WordPress event in Europe, and one of two major global WordPress events. As with WordPress, WordCamps are welcoming, accessible and inclusive to everyone.

It has come to our attention that our friends from some countries are having problems with their Visas being rejected on the ground that “a 40€ entry fee can not justify international travel”, something that makes this conference accessible to all. We are sad this is happening because now — for the first time in WordCamp Europe history — our inclusiveness is a burden we are carrying. Let us explain.

We try to make our ticket prices low, so anyone from anywhere in the world can join us. And that’s what is important – to share knowledge, educate people, and help those that are not as lucky as we are – no matter how far they live and what is their income. Of course, we could price our tickets much higher, but doing so wouldn’t be as inclusive as we want this event to be.

In you, Mr. President, we see our ally. We share the same values and passion as you – and the same goals. We want to make this world a better place, and we know that people are afraid of anything that is different or unknown.

WordCamp Europe was created with this goal. First in the Netherlands, then in Bulgaria, Spain, Austria and now finally France. At the heart of the WordPress community we promote the values of giving back, of helping, of including.

We feel that France, a country that gave us so many artists, inventors, athletes and political leaders, is a perfect place to show that unity once more. Now more than ever.

Dear Mr President, we hope you can see what we are trying to do and the importance of it, and we hope you can help us unblock this situation. We do not ask for a special treatment, but to stand by our shared values – let the people know that France is welcoming.

Let’s make this world a better place and let’s work together on building a brighter future.

Thank you.

Respectfully yours,

WordCamp Europe 2017 organising team
